The Running Tour Guide and I were taken to a MASSIVE ARCHEOLOGICAL site, Khorbat Zakariya, that is slated to be destroyed for commercial purposes by Marion Stone, Founder of ModiinHeritage.org.
The hill contains remains through various periods of history. There are Hasmonean remains, not excavated, but preserved. During the Roman, Byzantinian, Abassid, Fatimid, Crusader, Mameluk and Ottoman periods there was habitation here. In Mameluk times, the hill was known as Nebi Zakariya, an Arabic indication that the tomb of a prophet or a holy man was located there.
A recent salvage excavation has uncovered a village from the early Islamic period, described as Abbassid and Fatimid in character, which relates to the visible architectural features, and shows evidence of a prosperous population as well as glassmaking and pottery making industry in addition to the regular agricultural activities that are seen throughout the area, such as olive pressing. This evidence is new for researchers, and the site should be kept intact for that reason alone.
